“Childhood’s End” by Arthur C. Clarke was the first science fiction book I ever read. it was assigned to me by my high school English teacher. When we finished that module, he assigned me “Stranger in a Strange Land” by Robert Heinlein (a daring move given its racy content). He suspected that I might resonate with the genre and wanted to expose me to it. He was right and set me on a path to reading hundreds of Sci-Fi books over several decades. Today, I read much more widely, but it all started with science fiction when I was 16 years old. This is the impact that a teacher can have when they really see a student.
